If the Simpson’s Halloween specials are anything to go by, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, we love a bit of spook and gore when it comes to our film choices. There is though something a little bit more eerie in the air when October 31st once again swings around though, making it the perfect time to get watching those themed films.
So since Halloween movies have sort of evolved into their own genre we’ve decided to put a little list together of our favourite films that are sure to get you in the mood for fright night!
Kid friendly and a fun adventure film to boot, since its release in 1995, it has become a firm family favourite. With a young Christina Ricci playing the gutsy lead role as a girl who moves into a haunted house with her father and who then befriends our favourite friendly ghost Casper, this film is as fun and charming today as it ever was. Suitable for all the family, we still love this film.
4 The Craft
Especially a great choice for teenage girls, this cool film is pretty much about girl power! With 4 teenage witches testing their abilities and the chaos that comes from it, this sort of still fits into the high school movie genre favoured by a lot of teens. If they (or you!) love this, then you should also check out the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series from the 90s, early 2000s.
3 Sleepy Hollow
Tim Burton is known for his highly stylised gothic horror with a steam-punk vibe (look at The Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands), but one of his best films has to be Sleepy Hollow. With a star cast featuring Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson and more, this creepy film is a sure-fire way to get into the spirit of the season. And at the very least it will have you wanting to sharpen up your pumpkin carving skills.
2 The Addams Family
Christina Ricci pops up along in recommendations for spooky films, doesn’t she?! This is another one of her childhood films and is a complete cult classic. Follow the sinister and gothic Addams Family in this tongue-in-cheek look at the genre, and remember why the original TV series was such a hit. With big name actors like Angelica Houston and Christopher Lloyd, the settings and costumes are fantastic!
1 Hocus Pocus
Although a slow-burner upon its release in 1993, since then Hocus Pocus has gone on to become one of the greatest Halloween films of all time. Essentially an adventure film with a Halloween theme, the plot follows 3 children in Salem as they try to evade 3 witches that have come back thanks to a curse. With great quips, a fun plot and most importantly some toe-tappingly good songs, this film will never get old.
